A changing world
In sitting down to write this report I have realised just how much the world has changed since the last AGM. We were looking hopefully forward and anticipating a great year ahead including planning a 30th birthday celebration for MECA. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this was not able to occur, and 2020 looked very different from what was expected. But despite every challenge that was thrown at MECA, we survived and indeed even thrived, thanks in no small measure to Daniel, our acting manager, our fabulous staff and the amazing community that we work with. I want to acknowledge the great work of Daniel and the team in developing COVID safe policies and practices to ensure that MECA was able to continue providing services safely – for both staff and for clients – during this difficult time.

Following the resignation of our bookkeeper, the Management Committee sought an independent forensic audit of our finances to ensure that we were meeting all of our obligations. We now have a new bookkeeper and increased visibility and certainty about MECA’s finances.
Strengthening our partnerships
Amie, our wonderful manager, has taken extended maternity leave for another 12 months. I want to acknowledge the great work that Daniel has done in the role. Our amazing staff also deserve recognition – thanks to Yousef, Raeanne and Fadi and our new staff members Neha, Emma and Farhana. You are all amazing!
I would also like to acknowledge the commitment and passion of our Management Committee – Garry, Farabi, Abbas, Ammar, Carly and Kooryn and also acknowledge our new member Nene who is a member of the local Aboriginal community and who has been so supportive of MECA. Thank you all for your time and your energy in supporting MECA.
Lots of people contribute to MECA’s ongoing success and so I extend my thanks to all of you – clients, members of our community, partners, staff, volunteers, students, and management committee members. Without you, MECA would not be the dynamic and thriving organisation that it is.
